Cato van Schaik – Waterford Kamhlaba UWC
"To my surprise I enjoy working with disabled children”
Only four months ago I started at UWC Waterford Kamhlaba, but it already feels like a year. Why? Not because time seemed to pass by so slowly, but because we do so much and I enjoy almost every single activity.
What I enjoy most is community service. My community service is Ward8. We work with disabled children in the government hospital in Mbabane, Swaziland. I never expected to enjoy working with disabled children, the first time we drove there I just wanted to turn around and go back to campus. But my view has changed radically. It is challenging work, the children are abandoned and nobody really takes care of them. But I love going there, playing with the children, taking them outside and seeing their faces when they feel the sun.
Going to Waterford Kamhlaba UWCSA has given me the opportunity to discover those new passions and to experience new things I had never thought of doing. I am very grateful that this opportunity has been given to me, and I am determined to make the rest of the two years in Swaziland into a great and unforgettable experience by trying and discovering as much as possible.
I would like to thank all the sponsors that gave me the chance to do this.
In siSwati: ngiyabonga, thank you very much.
