Detmer Kremer - UWC in Mostar
How did you find out about UWC and why did you apply?
We had a presentation at my school, het Drachtster Lyceum. I never heard of it before and I didn’t even want to go to that presentation. But as it was compulsory I had to go and as soon as the presentation started I was sold. After the presentation and the many questions I asked, I knew for sure I was going to apply. My first thought changed so radically that I couldn’t even imagine not going to UWC anymore!
What are you first impressions of UWC?
I was picked up at the airport in Sarajevo and the little bus that drove us to Mostar was filled with my fellow students. We started to talk and talk (My English was much better than I thought it was) and I had a great time. The moment we passed the bright orange college that I saw on so many pictures I realized that I was really there. My stomach was in a knot and my heart pumping like crazy, so excited was I. After we got out of the car the stream of people that introduced themselves came over us and I was just amazed and realized I was at the right place.
What do you enjoy most about life at UWC?
The big events we organized with the entire student body, as they give you such a feeling of community but also a feeling that you’re really helping. But the small events are amazing as well. For example my best friend, a girl from Lebanon, had her birthday and we organized a small show for here, gave her cards and presents, laughed dance and ate cake. It was a small and very personal event but it was one of the things I enjoyed most.
What has been the most challenging aspect?
I thought it would be the English or the school work but it is neither. I think what is really challenging is to manage it all and to find time for yourself. You’re always busy with school, friends, CAS, travelling, skyping and so on. It is hard sometimes to step out of the rush of it all and self reflect and come to ease (that’s why winter break is so amazing!)
What subjects are you taking?
History, Visual Arts and English A2 on Higher Level and Dutch self-taught, Biology and Mathematical Studies on Standard Level
What CAS activities are you involved in?
Languages Ab Initio (where you teach the basics of a foreign language) MoPs (Mostar peer support) Hiking and Cycling, MUN, Karaserbes (where you play and help Roma children nearby Mostar), clowning, Amnesty International and World Today.
What advice would you give to students thinking about applying?
Don’t doubt yourself. I thought I would never get in, as there were people who did volunteer work in Peru or lived in Nepal for 6 years or something like that. I had nothing like that, however if you still want to help and like what UWC stands for it doesn’t really matter what you did, but who you are.
What are your ambitions after you leave UWC?
To study anthropology and art history in the United States and I’ll try to work at UNESCO.
