Nicole Hoogelander – UWC Atlantic College
“I have learned more outside the classroom than inside the classroomâ€
Thinking back about my first year at Atlantic College, I realise what an amazing year it has been. The amount of opportunities Atlantic College has given me is extraordinarily. I have learned so much. For me the power of UWC is that you learn more outside the classroom than inside the classroom. The diversity of the student body is extremely inspiring.
As a result of a world poverty, human rights and environment conference in Birmingham, I started the activity ‘Made in 48’ together with an Austrian girl. 48 hours is the average maximum legal working hours in a week. The activity is mainly focused on workers’ rights, sweatshops and poverty. With the activity we have informed people about the current conditions in sweatshops, fundraised in London for ‘Actionaid!’, went to conferences in Bristol, had a street theatre in Cardiff and had a big fundraiser Valentines week on campus. Altogether we raised over 1200 pounds! The activity has been my greatest achievement this year. But that’s not all: starting the process for a field hockey team for next year, driving boats and learning to rescue people in the Inshore Lifeboat service sessions, playing in the Netball team, fundraising for Pakistan and Japan and helping with the organization for the focus weeks has all been great experiences!
Thank you for the change you gave me. Without you I would not have been able to achieve all this.
Thank you. Ddiolch 'ch!
