United World College in Bosnia Herzegovina (Mostar)
Lighthouse" for Bosnia and Herzegovina 10 years after Dayton
A new UWC opened on the Balkans in Mostar in September 2006. This project is nick-named the “Lighthouse” because of the urgently needed educational reforms in Bosnia Herzegovina. This new College is a good example of quality education of international standing which encourages the integration of students from various ethnic backgrounds. It is funded on 40 years of UWC experience.
This College is situated in the famous gymnasium of Mostar. It also supports the introduction of the International Baccalaureate at the gymnasium of Banja Luka and the already existing IB curriculum at the Druga gymnasium in Sarajevo.
As soon as possible a lengthier description of this UWC-IBO school will be placed on this site.
Mostar is a young UWC school and less countries are represented here than in other UWC's (30 at present, 60 or more as from next year!). However the atmosphere is very good and the international students play an important role as brigde-builders between the students from various local ethnic backgrounds. The service programme is growing quickly, now including voluntary work in a refugee camp, amongst the Roma, with orphans, with elderly people, in an animal asylum and helping in a musical therapy programme under professional guidance. Futhermore, new ideas are always welcome. There are also many activities, such as MUN, World Religions at UWCiM, Astronomy and Photography (and others) and many sports and cultural projects, often set up and led by the students themselves. The boarding houses are spread throughout the city and the rules are quite relaxed, so you have a lot of own responsability. In short: a great challenge!
