United World College of Costa Rica Santa Ana, Costa RicaIn September 2006 a new UWC opened in Costa Rica, in a former school of the SOS Children’s Villages. The campus and facilities provide fantastic opportunities for this new College.Costa Rica is well-known for its political stability and peace keeping policies (it abolished the army in 1949).
The young school in Costa Rica is going through a phase of transition. The school teaches both in English and in Spanish and the school offers a service programme (still in the process of being worked out), with an emphasis on working in the local community and in the natural surroundings. The aim is to focus on: Peace, Nature and Central/South America. The CAS programme concentrates on these issues. By using the method ‘learning by doing’, this UWC school encourages students to engage in a life-long experience of active social service. To this effect the programme ‘Global Citizenship, Public Services and Global Concerns’ complements the academic curriculum.
Given the SOS background of the school, there are extra places for children from under-privileged backgrounds. The two elements (UWC and SOS) yet have to merge sucessfully. And due to its location in Central America, relatively many students come from that area. The facilities are not all in place yet. A lot of own initiative is needed to start up CAS activities. Knowledge of the Spanish language is a great asset. There are places for 200 students who live in 8 houses, with 3 or 4 students in each room. Each student has a mentor and a team of teachers guides and supports them in their personal, academic and social development.more information: www.uwccr.com/home.php
