Services
An important part of life at a College is your service. This can best be described as voluntary work for the community at large. You can choose between services involving sports, culture, a social contribution or environmental protection.
Every week you spend 2 afternoons doing your service. The nice thing is that you can do something back for your community in this manner and learn a lot in an active way at the same time. Usually you keep your service during the two years you are at the College. Teachers coach you (so you get to know them in a very different context from that of the classroom) and second years pass their knowledge and experience on to first years. In some cases you can switch from one service to another in the course of the two years.
Examples of services are: taking eye tests, teaching English or Arithmetic to young children, giving HIV/AIDS education, doing environmental research, doing rescue work at sea or in the wilderness. Where necessary you get a chance to obtain the relevant diploma’s, such as an in-depth First Aid exam, which is required for the rescue services.
As the options differ per College, it is important you state clearly in your application form whether you have a preference for certain services.
