This College has from 300 to 400 students in all. This covers form 1 to form 5 plus an IB department with about 130 students. About 20 % of the IB students are selected through the UWC National Committees. The rest have come from form 5 or are African residents whose parents pay the school fees or organised a scholarship themselves. In Swaziland there is only a small number of UWC students. There is a strong emphasis on the academic programme and there is also room for own initiative. Relatively less CAS activities are organised by the school.
The campus has 1 IB hostel (student house) and 3 other hostels for students of the other forms. Each student has their own little room (‘cubies’). There are a few cubies for 2 people. The IB hostel has one side for the girls and one side for the boys. In between there is a common room, a computer room and a TV room.
The College is situated on a hill with beautiful surroundings. Mbabane, the capital of Swaziland (a quite small town with about 10.000 inhabitants) lies at 10 kilometres distance. Supermarkets, restaurants and a cinema can be found there.
Swaziland is a wonderful country. It has beautiful nature and a very own culture. It is a developing country and the population is very friendly. The College is in a mountainous region and about a days’ travel from the Indian Ocean.
Every now and then a rock concert is given at school (by students and staff) and there are disco evenings on a regular basis. The theatre arts group often performs a play and you can join in even if you don’t take theatre arts as a subject.
The school year is from January until the end of November. There are 3 terms. Vacations are in mid April – mid May and in August (a month each) and the end of November – mid January (just under two months).
During the vacations you can travel to other countries in Africa and that is fantastic! (n.b. This is not covered by the scholarships.)
