The Mahindra United World College of India

Mahindra College has about 200 students from over 60 different countries.

It has 4 Wada’s (‘villages’), each with three girls’ houses, three boys’ houses and houses for the teachers. You share a room with three other students and there are two rooms – i.e. 8 students- in each house.

The College is at about 40 kilometres distance from Pune and it takes about one and a half hours by bus or one hour by jeep to get there. Khubavali and Paud are small villages nearby.

There are two Project weeks every year. During these weeks you can visit other parts of India to learn more about the Indian culture or hike through nature, for example.

Regularly, international happenings are held such as an African evening, a Scandinavian evening or festivities with a special theme, such as a Hindi feast or a Latin party. Performances are given by students or expositions to show what they have made. Every year there is also a theatre week with plays and musicals completely produced by students.

Every Wednesday between courses a Global Affairs session is held on a current theme of international concern. A presentation is given on the issue, followed by an hour of discussion.

Every Thursday between lessons a lecture is given with the title ‘This is India’ , in which many aspects of Indian culture and nature are dealt with and you really learn a lot about your new ‘home country’.

In order to get the students involved with the Indian culture, many Indian festivals such as Diwali and Holi are celebrated at school. Of course other cultures and nationalities also have the opportunity to show their customs, religious traditions and festivals. During Ramadan for example special hours are set for the meals for those who require this and lectures and discussions are held on the subject.

The campus also has a Social Centre, where you can watch TV and play billiards. It also has a small shop where you can buy soft drinks, ice cream and snacks.

Sport fields surround the school. These include tennis courts and a court for basketball, as well as two big fields for soccer, hockey, rugby, cricket, volleyball and other sports. There is a beautiful swimming pool which is open from 6 o’clock in the morning until quarter past ten at night. It’s lovely to cool off there. Also, there is a gym with fitness equipment, weights and a ping pong table.

Many lectures are held and workshops on a broad range of subjects, varying from ‘the history of chemistry’ to ‘how to cope with stress’, so you can always find something interesting to do.
