Li Po Chun United World College
Hong Kong

This College has about 240 students, of whom around 40% come from Hong Kong. The school has 4 houses / blocks were the students –about 60 in each- and some of the teachers live. Each house has three corridors. One leads to the girls’ rooms, one to the boys’ rooms and the third corridor leads to the houseroom. There are also flats for other teachers and members of staff.

There are 4 students in each dorm, including a first year and a second year from Hong Kong. The school is not situated in the centre of the city, but there are plenty of opportunities to reach the centre by taxi, bus or metro. There are also some shops 10 minutes walk away. There is a big shopping centre at half an hours’ walk or 5 minutes by taxi. Also, there are bikes at school which everyone can use. Sha Tin is half an hour away by bus and there are many other towns nearby.

Apart from the academics, social services and activities, many special events are organised. In the beginning of the first year you go on expedition. All first years are divided into two groups and go camping for a weekend.

Furthermore, a China Week is organised for the first years. This means that they all go in small groups to a place in China where they are exposed to the Chinese culture. They have a look around and usually participate in a small project of some kind.

Every year has one Project week. There are lots of things you can do in this week. You can set up your own project in a country you would like to visit and you can actually realize the project you have in mind. You can also join an organised project.

Besides all of these events, National Evenings are organised in turn by all of the continents. During a whole week, all sorts of activities take place to portray that continent (films are shown, a flea market of local goods may be held, etc.). On the final Saturday evening a big dinner takes place. Everybody gets dressed up and food is served from that particular continent. All the students from the region give a show with music, song and dance. This is great entertainment both for the students giving the show as for the audience.

Finally, every now and then the drama group performs or concerts are given by people at school who enjoy making music.
