UWC of the Atlantic Llantwit Major, Wales; UK
Atlantic College is situated on the south coast of Wales at about 30 kilometres distance from Cardiff. The College lies in a hilly area with chalk cliffs right at the sea front. It is located in the 12th century St. Donat’s Castle and has more students housing on the campus. The castle hosts the Dining Hall, the library and a number of classrooms. There are 7 student houses in all, each student shares a room with 3 others. The houses are all have an adjoining house where the house parents (also member of the teaching staff) live with their family. In total there are about 330 students of about 76 nationalities at AC. At about 3,5 kilometre distance, Llantwit Major is the nearest town (with about 6000 inhabitants). Every hour a small bus, a ‘college van’, goes to Llantwit Major. The nearest bigger city, Cardiff, is about an hour away by bus. Every Wednesday evening there is a ‘Wednesday evening concert’ given by students. Each Friday the ‘Friday evening lecture’ is held for the students by a UWC graduate or someone else, concerning their profession or issues of ‘Global Concerns’. Students from different countries organise ‘national evenings’ to present their country’s culture, often involving a lot of humour. This is fun to go to and also fun to do. The College has its own Arts Centre with a theatre where both students and other theatre groups give performances. Films are also shown here and they are open to the public living nearby. This College operates a boat station of the Royal National Lifesaving Institute at its sea front and participates in rescue operations at sea or on the cliffs. The College also has a farm and a building allowing groups of children and handicapped adults to stay for a week at the College. These are run by students in various services. Besides the classes, services and activities, ‘project weeks’ are organised. There enable the students to undertake activities they cannot normally do. This can vary from sailing in Wales to collecting oysters in France or even spending a week in Palestine to get a better understanding of the Israeli-Palestine conflict. more information: www.atlanticcollege.org AC
