United World College of the American West

(formally know as The Armand Hammer UWC)
New Mexico, U.S.A.

This school lies at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. About 200 students live in the castle in the middle of the campus. It is divided into 4 dorms and students all share a room with 2 or 3 other students.

Several years ago, this school founded the “Bartos Institute for the Constructive Engagement of Conflict” which aims to teach students skills of conflict resolution. People from conflict regions are invited to the training sessions to share their experiences with the students.

The school is located in the middle of a forest and is surrounded by mountains. These constitute an important element in the UWC experience. Camping and training are an integrated part of the programme and ‘wilderness survival’ and ‘environmental concern’ form an important part of the curriculum.

The post office of Montezuma is at 5 minutes walking distance. Las Vegas (not the gambling city) is a 20 minutes bus ride away.

During the first half year, South West studies are organised: this is like a project week to discover the surroundings. Trips are made to Mexico and nearby states and an expedition is organised to the Grand Canyons.

In the second half year there is a project week in which the first years join one of the trips organised by the faculty. Second years are allowed to organize something themselves.

Every Friday evening films are shown on a big screen in the auditorium. On a regular basis performances, lectures and workshops are held centring around various issues. Every few months on Saturdays a theme-day is organised concerning a continent. Usually this is a big happening and students rehearse for weeks in advance. Each 2 years all continents have their turn.
