Wendela Schim van der Loeff – UWC South East Asia
How did you find out about UWC and why did you apply?
Finding out about UWC from the amazing adventures my cousin had at Mahindra UWC (India), I immediately felt like I would be at home at a United World College. Of course there was the selection process to go through first. The opportunity of even only having a chance to go to a UWC was definitely worth applying.
What are you first impressions of UWC?
My first impression of UWC was the diversity. Meeting people from each continent upon arrival to the college had quite an impact on me, of course only positive impacts! What also really ‘impressed’ me was the fact that everyone was so mature and outgoing. It’s really an amazing experience to be constantly surrounded by such inspiring people.
What do you enjoy most about life at UWC?
Although I really enjoy school time, I think the time I spend either in the boarding house, doing activities or traveling are my most enjoyed moments. Living in a boarding house, constantly surrounded by friends is comparable to a constant sleepover and who doesn’t like sleepovers?
What has been the most challenging aspect?
I guess the most challenging aspect is when you are having a bad day, you do not have your friends and family around you (especially when you have only just started your UWC experience) to give you a big hug. It however does not take a long time for you to have friends, who are almost equal to family.
What subjects are you taking?
Higher levels: PHYSICS, MATHEMATICS and DUTCH
Standard levels: ECONOMICS, PHILOSOPHY and ENGLISH
And obviously Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
What CAS activities are you involved in?
Being in my second year it would be too much to name all the CAS activities I have been involved in. In my first year I tutored local children, ranging the ages of primary school, once a week. I play Floorball, which is very enjoyable as there are hardly any rules! I also participated in Initiative For Peace, UN night (representing the Netherlands), Senior House Yearbook and other publications and Global Concerns. I promise you, you will not be bored!
What advice would you give to students thinking about applying?
Do it! You will not regret it for a single bit.
What are your ambitions after you leave UWC?
Not entirely sure what I want to do in future or where I want to live, I applied to universities in the United States, United Kingdom and also in the Netherlands. For all except the States, I applied for Mathematics, knowing that I will enjoy this (not really sure where it will get me though).
